Latest News

Read below to find out more about some of the different activities we have been getting up to; from sporting and musical activities, to visitors and 'wow' days. We are looking forward to helping our children 'explore and grow' further in 2023-24.

  • French Day

    Thu 29 Jun 2023 M Davis

On Thursday 29th June, we had a French day where we looked at countries across the world where they speak French.

Mrs Honorez introduced the day with an assembly, before we split into mixed aged groups to experience four different activities across the morning. Mrs Davis led an activity exploring French music from African countries; Mrs Wingrove led an activity identifying French speaking countries around the world; Mrs Honorez ran a French Cafe; and Mrs Ranson played French sports outside.

During the afternoon, the children returned to their classes to explore the work of a French speaking artist, creating their own artwork in response.

  • Year 5 Inspiring Scientists Day

    Tue 27 Jun 2023 M Davis

On Tuesday 27th June, our Year 5 children were invited to Casterton College to take part in an Inspiring Scientists Day. Accompanied by Mrs Roberts and Mrs Honan, the children took part in a range of science activities including firing rockets and solving a crime using chromatography.

A huge thank you to Casterton for hosting and running the event.

  • Fort Henry Walk

    Fri 23 Jun 2023 M Davis

The annual Fort Henry Walk seemed to come around quickly this year! Fortunately the weather cooled a little, to make for very pleasant walking weather as we walked together from school to Fort Henry for our picnic.

It is one of my favourite points of the year, when we can enjoy the beautiful countryside in which we live, and walk together with friends and families.

This year we made it in record time, and beat the picnics! After a rest eating lunch, and some time playing in the field, we took a more leisurely pace back to school.

It was lovely to be able to chat with each other as we walked and to see the children across the school mixing together. A good time was had by all!

  • RLT Swimming Gala

    Thu 22 Jun 2023 M Davis

On Thursday, 12 of our children from across year 4,5,6 took part in the first RLT Swimming Gala at Oakham School pool. We have many talented swimmers, and it was great for them to be able to go and share their talents in the pool.

We had a lot of winners in heats, and a few medals from the finals. Well done to all concerned!

  • Year 6 RLT Science Enrichment

    Wed 21 Jun 2023 M Davis

Over the past few weeks, all of year 6 have been lucky enough to be able to take part in some science workshops for gifted and talented scientists, run by a retired science teacher from Uppingham School.

There was a real focus on developing our knowledge of physics with experiments to look at forces and developing our understanding of stars and planets.

It was a great experience to learn from someone so knowledgeable - even Mrs Davis learnt something new!

  • Road Safety Training

    Wed 21 Jun 2023 M Davis

Aqua class had a visit from RCC this morning to help them practise their skills in road safety. They listened carefully to road safety rules, before giving them a go in the school playground. Hopefully we all now know to stop, look and listen; and to take our time before crossing roads!

  • RMH Summer Sing

    Fri 16 Jun 2023 M Davis

On Friday we joined with five other schools in Oakham School Chapel for the annual Rutland Music Hub Summer Sing. We had been learning the songs here at school, and were looking forward to sharing singing with children from other schools.

What a phenomenal sound we all made together! Ably led by Beth, from NMPAT, the partner organisation for the Rutland Music Hub, we were soon singing in two and three parts and raising our voices in joyful song.

We finished with a final recording of all the songs, including Mrs Davis singing a little solo in the pieces we sang from 'The Pied Piper' - the piece Mr Davis wrote for the Rutland Music Hub just before COVID.

We had a fantastic morning, and the children sang brilliantly!

  • RLT KS2 Athletics

    Wed 14 Jun 2023 M Davis

The sun shone down on us again for the RLT Key Stage 2 athletics this year.

We were again lucky enough to be able to be at Corby Stadium and experience running on a real track and jumping into a real long-jump pit. The children all tried their hardest at a range of events, and we came away with a large number of certificates and medals - not bad for the smallest school in the trust!

As always, the children's behaviour was exemplary, and they not only cheered on their own team mates, but also those from other schools. No child crossed the finishing line without a cheer from Exton!

A huge thank you to Hazel Glassford who organised the event, to all the other RLT schools who helped to staff each activity, and to our own staff for helping the event run like clockwork!

  • Samba Drumming Workshops

    Mon 12 Jun 2023 M Davis

On Monday 12th June we were very pleased to welcome the Rutland Music Hub to lead the whole school in some Samba drumming workshops. Year 4/5/6 had spent time exploring samba as part of their class music and were looking forward to putting some of their knowledge into practice with a specialist in samba.

The day started with an opportunity for EYFS and Year 1 to explore the samba instruments and practise playing different rhythms. It was lots of fun, if very loud!

Teal Class (year 2 and 3) had a go next, and were able to play the range of samba instruments, and try playing together with different poly-rhythms.

In the afternoon Cobalt and Navy classes were able to share all their learning from their music unit and put together different polyrhythms, call and responses and create some amazing music.

The children had an amazing day, and the practitioner said he was very impressed with the level of musicality from all of the children.

    Well done everyone!

  • RLT KS1 Athletics Festival

    Mon 12 Jun 2023 M Davis

Our Key Stage 1 children all had a fantastic time at the RLT KS1 Athletics at Corby Stadium on Friday.

The sun shone and the weather was beautiful, as the children embarked on a variety of activities on both track and field. It was lovely to be able to at a 'proper' athletics track and experience what it is like to long jump into sand and to run on a proper athletics track.

Miss Barker reports that the children were all beautifully behaved and a good time was had by all. Please see the pictures attached for a flavour of the event.
