Read below to find out more about some of the different activities we have been getting up to; from sporting and musical activities, to visitors and 'wow' days. We are looking forward to helping our children 'explore and grow' further in 2023-24.

• Easter Celebrations

  Wednesday 23rd March saw our Easter Celebrations.

   

  We started with a visit to Greetham Church, where KS2 told the story of Holy Week, from Palm Sunday until Easter Day. This was interspersed with songs from the entire school which helped tell the story. The children presented confidently and clearly and, as ever, the singing was exemplary!

   

  At the end of the service, Rev. Marcus talked to us about the meaning of Easter and the children were all given Easter wrist bands. There was then a hearty singing of 'Lord of the Dance' before we joined in refreshments kindly provided by the church.

   

  Back at school, there was time to decorate our hard boiled eggs before lunch in time for the egg rolling in the afternoon. The nursery children joined us for our, now traditional, egg rolling. There was a lot of fun, and for the second year running all the eggs were hard boiled! We then went out into the playground for our egg and spoon races, followed by our Easter egg Hunt. A lot of fun (and chocolate) was had by all.

   

• Spotlight Dance

  On the evenings of 22nd and 23rd March the vast majority of our KS2 children took part in the Spotlight Dance Showcase organised by RSSP at Stamford Corn Exchange.

   

  All of KS2 had been learning a dance based on a football theme as part of their curriculum PE, and it was great that so many of them, and their parents, were willing to give up two evenings to go and share their work with others from different Rutland Primary Schools. 

   

  As ever, the children were fantastic, and put their all into both performances, and all the staff involved were very impressed with their dancing.

• Sports Relief

  The children came in dressed as their favourite sport today, and we had a wide variety. From horse riders to gymnasts; from swimmers to rugby players; from hockey stars to kick boxers; there were some great sports kits shared!

   

  There were lots of different activities available at playtime, and at lunchtime Miss Lynch organised some obstacle course games.

   

  In the afternoon we did our fun run on the playground, as the field was a little too slippy. The children ran at least 3 times around the playground, and some even managed more than 40! Please see below for pictures.

   

  £383 has been raised, which is a fantastic achievement for a small school. Thank you to all who have contributed or sponsored children.

  

• Bible Assembly

  In our assembly on Wednesday this week, Rev Marcus gave out Children's Bibles to children who had joined the school in the last few years.

   

  The churches of Exton and Greetham have always bought a children's Bible for each child who attends the school, and as we have had quite a few children join the school, there were a lot of Bibles to give out!

   

  The children all enjoyed looking at their Bibles. Class 1 were so excited, that they chose to read the Bible during choosing time (see the pictures below!).

  

• Police Visit to Year 5/6

  We were very pleased to welcome Steve, our local PCSO, into school to talk to the year 5/6 children. Steve came to enable the children to get to know what his job entails in Rutland, and to allow the children to understand more about policing in general.

   

  There were lots of interesting questions about crime, as well as discovering that police spend most time in Rutland helping people. We are lucky to live in a county with a fairly low crime rate, so more time is spent helping at accidents and working in the community.

   

  We also got to know a bit more about Steve, who used to be a farmer before becoming a PCSO. His favourite part of the job is being able to help people.

   

  As our year 5/6 children look towards becoming more independent, especially as they travel to and from secondary school in the near future, it was good to get to know Steve better and know that he and his colleagues will always be there to help if we are afraid or need assistance.

• World Book Day

  World Book Day was celebrated one day early at Exton & Greetham School in order to ensure that we got a full day of reading and writing activities.

   

  The day started with an opportunity for the whole school to share their costumes and favourite books, with staff reading their own favourite stories to the children. Mrs Fowler read 'Little Rabbit Foo-Foo' which is a favourite of the whole school, Mrs Wingrove read 'Monkey Puzzle' by Julia Donaldson, Mrs Davis read 'Marvin who wanted more', and Mr Marks read us a story about a bear who had lost his hat. We were a little suspicious that the rabbit in Mr Marks' story came to a sticky end!

   

  We then worked together as a whole school on writing alliterative phrases and sentences, eventually turning these into tongue twisters, based on Peter Piper.

   

  The afternoon was spent writing more poetry. While KS1 finished off their tongue twisters, KS2 were able to create a poem of their choice. We ended up with a selection of Haiku, Tanka, Kennings, Shape Poems, Rhyming poetry and Free verse. These were then bound together to make a commemorative book of poetry for the day.

   

  We finished the day by performing our poems in the hall.
