Read below to find out more about some of the different activities we have been getting up to; from sporting and musical activities, to visitors and 'wow' days. We are looking forward to helping our children 'explore and grow' further in 2025-26.

  • Fire and Rescue Assemblies

    Fri 06 Nov 2015 M Davis

We welcomed a fire officer today from Leicestershire and Rutland Fire Service who came to talk to the children about Fire Safety.

He started the morning by presenting an assembly to our KS1 children. Here he talked about how to keep ourselves safe and about the important job smoke detectors do.

After playtime, he spent time with KS2 talking about how quickly fire spreads, and how important it is that they have escape routes planned, as well as having working smoke detectors in the house.

Hopefully the children have all been nagging their parents to check the batteries in the smoke detectors at home. Having watched a film with KS2 that showed just how quickly a small spark can become a full fire, I checked my own smoke detectors when I got home. They may be annoying when set off by cooking; but they really are life savers.

  • They won!

    Fri 09 Oct 2015 M Davis

A huge thank you has been sent to the school from Alec Shillaker, an ex-pupil who had asked for parents to support his quest to win a competition run  by Mountain Warehouse. Alec contacted me at the beginning of the week to let us know that thanks to the number of votes, they have won the £10000 prize for their chosen charity 'Meningitis Now'.

Many thanks to all those who took the time to vote on the website.

  • FOEGS Task Force

    Sun 04 Oct 2015 M Davis

A huge thank you to all parents, governors, pupils, family and friends who came on Saturday to help rejuvenate our school grounds.

The weather was kind to us and there was a real sense of purpose from everyone who came. Younger children picked up rotten apples and gathered ones we could eat from the trees, as well as helping with weeding. Older children helped with pruning, weeding and painting, while the adults were able to paint and preserve the covered area, mend hinges, begin making a mud kitchen for EYFS/ KS1, build raised beds, prune the wildlife area, clean the pond, mend and clear the greenhouse and move things around to make our grounds look more inviting.

A special thank you to Hannah's granddad, who has offered to pick up the rubbish and also take away the pagoda from the remembrance garden and mend it so that it can be used again safely.

It was lovely to have so many people to help, including past pupils. It really was a case of many hands make light work.

  • Supporting an Ex-Pupil Fundraising for Meningitis Now

    Mon 28 Sep 2015 M Davis

Thank you so much to all those parents who supported former pupil Alec Shillaker (1985-1992) in his quest to raise funds for Meningitis Now a couple of weeks ago. I am pleased to report that following the first round of voting, Alec’s entry made it into the top 10. They have now reset the votes for the final round and they have until 5pm on the 30th September to get as many people as they can to vote for them (and verify the vote by clicking the link in the e-mail).

Alec has emailed to thank you for your support and has asked you to think about voting again. He says:

“Everyone can vote again and we now need more help than ever to try and win this money for the charity.  I appreciate that I'm asking a lot and you've already done more than I could imagine, but could I possible ask for your assistance one last time?

Thank you so much for your help.”

    Alec’s Competition Entry

    The Challenge

We are attempting the biggest challenge of our lives by trekking the highest mountain in the Southern & Western hemispheres. Aconcagua in Argentina is the 2nd highest of the 7 summits after Everest. It'll take 27 days, with temperatures as low as -30C

    The Charity

At 9 months old our son, Finn, developed pneumococcal meningitis. Fortunately he survived & appears to have no lasting effects, however the speed at which it took hold, the helplessness we felt and the fear of almost losing him makes us want to help others

    The Training

Finn himself has helped with the training; he has his own walking boots and has already been up Snowdon twice. We have also climbed it ourselves 3 times in 1 day as endurance training. My wife, who is also doing the trek, is running & doing a half marathon.

It costs nothing to vote, and they would be very grateful if you would be prepared to support them. All you need to do to register a vote is to visit the website: http://www.mountainwarehouse.com/charity/entries/aconcagua-6962m-22841ft-upthendown-e2536.aspx

We always refer to Exton & Greetham CE Primary School as a big family, and it is lovely that an ex-pupil has felt able to contact us for support.

  • School Games Mark

    Fri 25 Sep 2015 M Davis

We are proud to announce that following a validation visit, we have again been awarded the Bronze School Games Mark.

The School Games Mark recognises the amount of PE we do in school, the number of competitions we enter and the work that the children do in leading games activities for each other.

A particular thanks to Mrs Ranson for putting the application together. We are very close to qualifying for the silver award and are hoping to achieve this next year.

  • Harvest

    Fri 25 Sep 2015 M Davis

The school hall was full of tins, packets, drama, Haiku, prayers and music this morning!

Many thanks to all those parents who sent in donations for the Rutland Food Bank. This local charity really appreciates our support.

Thank you also to all the parents, relatives and friends of the school who came to support our Harvest Service. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. We are especially proud of our youngest children for standing up in front of a crowd in the hall for the first time and performing with such enthusiasm.

  • Ambulance Visit

    Fri 11 Sep 2015 M Davis

On Wednesday 9th September Steve the paramedic bought his ambulance to the school site to tell the nursery children, EYFS and KS1 all about his job. Steve talked to class 1 before letting them look around the ambulance. Now the children have a lot more ideas for when they are playing in the role play area hospital in the classroom!

Thank you Steve. We love your visits, whether you are teaching us first aid, telling us about your paramedic job, coming to help in an emergency or entertaining us at the school discos!

  • Music Assembly

    Tue 08 Sep 2015 M Davis

Mr McClure came in to take assembly today and demonstrate some of the instruments that he teaches. He started by showing us the guitar and the ukulele and talked about how they make their sound. He then played us some music on the piano.

At the end of the assembly he played his drum kit. He tried to tell us that he could play the drums by pointing at them, but we could see his feet moving! Olly showed us what he had learnt last year in his drum lessons, and we all clapped along.

If any parents wish their children to start music lessons this year, please fill in the form on the letter that will come home this evening.

  • Leaver's Assembly

    Wed 15 Jul 2015 M Davis

Today was a day of heightened emotions as we shared drama, songs and memories as part of our Leaver's Assembly.

After a rousing round of 'We are from Exton & Greetham School', the Key Stage 2 children performed their play 'I'm a year 6, get me out of here'. The year 6 children were sent to the jungle and had to complete a range of challenges, as well as share their memories. The drama was also interspersed with some super singing.

After the play, Mrs Davis talked about each of the year 6 children and how they had changed since they started at the school. The children were all given a commemorative mug, a year group photograph and a Bible from the church.

After another song, certificates of achievement were handed out to Year 6, and thanks given to all those who give up their time to support the school through volunteering to help listen to readers, support the school through FOEGS, and to staff and governors.

The assembly concluded with the year 6's choice of song 'where do we go from here?'. We saved this until last, as we knew it would make us all emotional!

This year 6 are a very special year group and we are proud of all their achievements. They have worked hard all year and are all ready for secondary school. We wish them all well, and hope that they will keep in touch.

  • Lincoln Castle Trip

    Mon 13 Jul 2015 M Davis

We all had a fantastic time on Monday at Lincoln Castle. The trip concluded a year of talking about castles in Class 1, and allowed us all to learn a little more about local history.

The day consisted of a rotation of 3 workshops. We all had the opportunity to design a shield and attend a banquet. Some children even had a go at being the court jester! The second activity was a historical walk around the walls of the castle. The children enjoyed climbing up to the walls and then climbing back down to visit the dungeons. Lincoln Castle is a Mott and Bailey castle, and is one of only two in the country to have two Motts. The final workshop allowed the children to look at the historical development of armour and learn a few techniques with bows and arrows and swords.

Thank you to Mrs Fowler for her suggestion of a location for this trip, and to Mrs Almond for her great organisational powers!
