Fort Henry Walk
Fri 10 Jul 2015Another glorious day of weather meant that our walk to Fort Henry was beautiful! We are very lucky to be in a school so close to open fields and we enjoyed walking through the fields of crops and poppies as we followed the path to Fort Henry.
Everyone was able to walk at their own pace. Mrs KK led the way, while Mrs Davis bought up the rear. It was lovely to be joined by so many parents, including one of our new families for September.
Mrs Wardle met us at Fort Henry with all the packed lunches and we enjoyed sitting under the trees while we enjoyed our picnics. Batteries recharged, it was then time to make our way back.
We are obviously all fitter this year, as we were back at school much quicker and were soon enjoying ice pops in the shade on the playground.
Many thanks to all who joined us on the walk, and enjoyed a well deserved cup of tea on their return. Thank you also to Mrs Wardle for transporting lunches so that we didn't have lots to carry.

Year 6 Sailing
Wed 08 Jul 2015Year 6 went sailing at Rutland Sailing Club as part of their leaving activities.
The weather was perfect - not too hot, and not too cold, with just enough wind!
After paddling their boats round to the shelter of the creek (learning to use the rudder on the way) they were soon off on the water in individual boats. Mrs Davis and Mrs Wingrove were a little jealous as they supervised from the side, as it looking like enormous fun!
The pictures attached were taken on phone cameras, so we apologise for the quality being less than normal.

Mon 06 Jul 2015Our year 5 were invited to join with year 5 children from other primary schools in and around Rutland at a specially organised STEM day.
The children enjoyed the opportunity to find out more about space through science, maths and technology and came back with lots of ideas. They had also had a lot of fun along the way!

Chicks!
Fri 03 Jul 2015We have again played host to some eggs in the hope of hatching chicks.
By Thursday morning we had successfully hatched 10/11 eggs. One was a little weaker than the others, but with some gentle mothering from Mrs Almond and Mrs Heywood, he was soon in with the other chicks and asserting himself!
The children all enjoyed the opportunity to watch the miraculous way in which the tiny chicks peck their way free of their egg. It is hard to imagine that the fluffy chicks fitted into a small egg just 24 hours previously.
After the weekend we were able to handle the chicks and get to know them a little better.
Some have gone to live with Hannah and Katie's grandma, some went to Polly and Georgie's farm, and some went to one of the nursery parents. We are sure they will all be happy in their new homes.

Orienteering
Thu 02 Jul 2015Year 5/6 enjoyed taking part in the Orienteering competition on Thursday 2nd July.
For the first time, this was held at Sykes Lane. The children all had a fantastic time, working well with partners to navigate their way around two courses. They came back very proud of their achievements!
Many thanks to Mrs Ranson and Mrs Wardle for accompanying the children and for helping marshal the course.

E-Safety Drama
Thu 25 Jun 2015We were invited to join with other primary schools at Whissendine CE Primary School to watch a production to learn more about keeping ourselves safe on the internet. As our children become more independent in their internet use, this becomes more and more important. The children really enjoyed the play, and came back buzzing with lots of new information about how to keep themselves safe.
Many thank to Whissendine School for allowing us to join them.

Year 5/6 Rounders
Tue 23 Jun 2015Year 5/6 had a fantastic time representing the school at the RSSP Rounders competition. Play improved throughout the competition, and after a nervous start, our team soon picked up confidence and were triumphant in their last game.
Well done to all the children involved and thank you to Mrs Ranson for taking the team and coaching them so well.

Rutland Music Hub Singing Day
Mon 15 Jun 2015KS2 were singing enthusiastically in Oakham School Chapel this morning as part of the Rutland Music Hub Singing Day.
The day was led by Mr Davis, the Director of Music at Oakham School, (and Mrs Davis's husband!) and we were soon enthusiastically singing about Spuds, Stagefright and Motorway Cones amongst other things.
The morning enabled us to develop our singing by singing with 200 other children, looking at our breathing in particular. We were able to sing in two parts and to help lead the descant part.
Many thanks to the Music Hub for organising the event.

First Aid Training
Wed 03 Jun 2015At the end of the day on Wednesday 3rd June it looked like there had been a terrible incident at school. Fear not! The many bandages and slings that went home were the result of some fantastic first aid training given to all the children by 'Disco Steve' the paramedic.
The day started with some basic first aid skills shared with reception and KS1. KS2 then had the rest of the day to develop their own skills in CPR and basic first aid. They were reminded what to do in an emergency to ensure that everyone is kept safe until the emergency services arrive. They were then guided through how to keep someone breathing and were able to practice on three different sized dummies; a baby, a child and an adult. The afternoon was then spent looking at how to use an epipen safely, and then looking at how to bandage different sorts of injuries and correctly put on a sling.
Many thanks to Steve for providing this valuable educational experience. Photos to follow.

Hinduism Trip
Tue 02 Jun 2015KS2 had a fantastic, informative trip yesterday to visit a Mandir in Leicester as part of our work on Hinduism in RE.
We started the day at the St Philip's Centre looking at different artefacts and sharing what we had learnt in school already.
We then went to the Mandir and were able to look around and observe what happened there, as well as speak to the priest. He told us lots of interesting things about the Hindu faith. It was particularly interesting to note that one of the ceiling paintings showed key figures from all the major religions, including Jesus, as they believe that all people are equal and should be respected.
Pictures can be found in the gallery. Many thanks to Mr Richardson for his expert photography.
