Walkwise
Fri 22 Jun 2018Today's Walkwise session was an expedition into Oakham! To really test the children's road safety skills, it is important that they get the opportunity to practise crossing some busier roads than we find in Exton village. A trip into Oakham also allowed them to practise crossing roads with green man crossings and with islands partway across.
Thank you to Tish Barnwell for organising the transport into Oakham and for leading the children around Oakham, Miss Bevins and Mrs Wardle for supervising from school and to the parents and grandparents who were able to come and assist.

High Sheriff Visit
Wed 20 Jun 2018Today we were pleased to welcome the new High Sheriff of Rutland to our school. Mrs Susan Jarron came and looked around the school and heard all about what we get up to each day. She then told us all about her job in assembly. We had lots of questions about the special clothes that she wears, about her hat and especially about her sword. Some of class 1 thought that she might be a pirate with her lacy cuffs! She also told us about how she was appointed and the history of the post of Sheriff.
Thank you so much for visiting and we hope to see you again soon!

Mathematical Circus!
Mon 18 Jun 2018On Monday 3 of our year 5 children joined other children from across the Rutland Learning Trust at Cottesmore Academy for a Mathematical Circus, organised by one of the Teaching Assistants at Whissendine School, Mr Asplin. Mr Asplin loves maths, and enjoys sharing the amazing things he has found out with children.
This event allowed the children to explore all sorts of maths, including fractals. It ended with the great exploration of pie in a circle..... This was investigated using.... you've guessed it... pies! Using the playground and A LOT of individual pies, the children were able to prove the link between the circumference and the radius and diameter of a circle - what a fantastic idea!
Thank you to Cottesmore School for hosting, and to Mr Asplin for his amazing maths ideas!

Diocesan Visitor
Mon 18 Jun 2018We were visited today by Rev Doug Spensley from Peterborough Diocese. He led our assembly and we enjoyed joining in with the story of the Prodigal Son. Whilst the Cottesmore benefice of churches is without a vicar following Rev Marcus's departure, Rev Spensley is here to support the school in their church foundation. His job is to visit and support schools who haven't got a local parish priest. We are looking forward to welcoming him again in July and seeing what other exciting stories he will share! -
Look What's Hatching!
Tue 12 Jun 2018We received 11 eggs and an incubator yesterday from Living Eggs, and less than 24 hours later have already been rewarded with one hatched chick! Class 1 were lucky enough to be there to watch the chick break his way out. There was much debate as to whether it was a boy or a girl - we think a boy now that he has begun to dry out. Suggested names were Awesome Tigger and Lola!
Wednesday update.... And then there were four! Chick number 4 popped out just before 5pm. After School Club were able to see the chick break out into fresh air. With more small holes appearing, I wonder how many chicks there will be in the morning?
Thursday morning..... 9 chicks have safely hatched! They just need to become a little stronger, and then next week we should be able to have a chance to hold a chick! More pictures below!
Friday's grand total was 10 chicks - 3 girls and 7 boys we think! Mrs Almond took the chicks home for the weekend to make sure that they were properly fed and watered.
This week the chicks have been visiting classrooms and the children have had a chance to hold them. We have been encouraging gentle hands and no squeezing!
And finally.... three of the chicks have found a new home with a school family - we are sure they will be well looked after. The remainder have returned to Living Eggs. We hope to have eggs again next year!

Rutland Poppy Project
Tue 12 Jun 2018We were visited by the Rutland Poppy Project today to make our contribution. The Rutland Poppy Project is aiming to make 10,000 clay poppies for display at Oakham Castle for the centenary of the end of World War 1 in November.
We had a fantastic time creating our poppies and are looking forward to being able to go and see them glazed and in situ in November.
A huge thank you to the ladies who came to show us how to make the poppies and who are running the project.

Why work at Exton & Greetham?
Mon 11 Jun 2018As part of their literacy work, Class 2 wrote adverts for teachers to come and work at our school. They looked at what we needed to say to 'sell' the school and reflected on what they felt made a good teacher. Of course, Mrs Davis found an opportunity to share a song, and we watched the 'new nanny' song from Mary Poppins to get some more ideas!
Below are two of the adverts that were written. Mrs Davis knows who she is going to ask to write her next job advert!

Quadkids
Thu 24 May 2018I wonder if any other school have over half of their KS2 children representing their school in a single sporting activity?! We had 63% of KS2 taking part in Quadkids Athletics on Thursday after school!
Mrs Ranson and Miss Bevins were very impressed with all the children who attended.
Mrs Ranson writes: "Congratulations to our team of 15 athletes who attended the Quadkids event at Casterton College yesterday. All participants competed in a sprint, long distance run, throw and a jump. We had some amazing throwers, one even threw it beyond the length of the measuring tape! Everyone launched themselves with a spring into the sandpit for their jumps, the sprints were fiercely contested and, even though the distance races around the athletics track were tough, every Exton pupil ran around and made Miss Bevins and Mrs Ranson very proud. Thank you to the team and to the supporters."
We received the results on Friday afternoon which showed that both our Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 teams came third! We also had some individual triumphs, with Declan coming 2nd overall for the Year 3/4 Boys individually, and Skye coming 3rd overall for the Year 3/4 Girls individual competition.

What makes our school special?
Mon 14 May 2018Our enrichment writing group were asked to write some reasons why children and parents should choose our school. The following are completely unprompted - but the staff are very touched by their kind comments!
"You should come to our school because our school has all the best teachers and the best learning methods. If you tell them that you don't understand then they will find a way for you to understand. There are the most kind people. They give the best education."
"Our school is good because all the kids are very nice, kind and helpful. All the teachers help encourage all the kids to enjoy and move on in their learning. We all get along and play well. I like the school because it encourages me in my learning and to get along with everyone."
"The teacher are organised and I love every lesson! Our headteacher is the best one I could ask for! If I had to pick any school in Rutland, it would for sure be this one. All of the kids are so nice and empathetic."

Cross Country Success!
Thu 03 May 2018We were delighted to receive a Bronze Medal in the post today for Declan, who had represented the school and the county in Rutland and Leicestershire Cross County Competition a few weeks ago.
Once the team scores had been added up, the Rutland team had come 3rd overall. Well done to Declan for his contribution to the Rutland medal!
