Young Carers' Assembly
Thu 26 Apr 2018Today we were visited by the people who run the Young Carers' support groups in Rutland. They, along with a pupil who is a young carer, introduced the children to what a young carer was, and what the groups do to support young carers.
The assembly started with a game where we had to stand up if we were in a particular group. This highlighted that sometimes people do things that we don't know about, and that we perhaps don't know everything that someone is going through.
We then watched a short video presented by Young Carers about the Young Stars group and the activities that they do. It all looked lots of fun!

FOEGS Taskforce
Sat 21 Apr 2018The sun shone down on us on Saturday morning - the perfect weather for our Taskforce morning!
A happy band of parents worked together for most of the morning to re-stain the outside covered area from a very faded green to a more vibrant blue. A particular thank you to those who realised we could eke out the paint to finish the last couple of panels! The greenhouse was also cleaned out to make it more useful for gardening club.
Inside, Mr Chalkley, our Chair of Governors, was hard at work rebuilding shelves in our paper store, having taken them apart the previous day to make the space more useful. Miss Bevins sorted the contents of the cupboard so that we now have a more user friendly space.
The children who came watered flower beds and kept the adults provided with refreshments as well as having a little go with the painting.
It is mornings like these that remind me what a wonderful school community we have, with everyone pulling together to help keep our school the wonderful place that it is. Thank you to all involved.

Year 5/6 TAG Rugby tournament
Tue 17 Apr 2018Today was the postponed year 5/6 TAG Rugby tournament at Oakham Rugby Club. Our intrepid team set off in high spirits to take part in the Osprey League - seeing an osprey on the way there felt like a good omen for our chances in the matches!
In some closely fought battles we lost our first two matches. We learnt from our mistakes and won our second two matches. There was some great teamwork to grab TAGs and to make sure that the ball made it safely across the line. We all found our inner 'grr'!
I was very proud of all of our team, not only in how well they played, but how they worked together and supported each other as a team. Fab work!
A huge thank you to Drew's mum Ruth for accompanying us and acting as referee. Your expertise was much appreciated by not only our school, but also the other schools that you refereed for.
As an entirely year 5 team, the future looks good for next year's tournament!

Easter Celebrations
Thu 29 Mar 2018What a fantastic end to term 4!
Our day of Easter Celebrations began with a very moving service at Greetham Church. Children from Class 3 took us through the Easter story and the whole school interspersed the tale with songs. Cathy then talked to us about what really symbolises Easter. It was lovely to share in hot cross buns and drinks after the service, before setting off back to school.
At school there was just time to decorate our hard boiled eggs before we ate our delicious Easter lunch, cooked beautifully by Lizzy.
The afternoon was an afternoon of egg-citing fun! We began with our traditional Exton Egg Rolling competition in the hall - always noisy, but great fun! It was then time to go outside for our Easter egg hunt. Thank you to FOEGS and the teaching assistants for setting this up. Finally we had our egg and spoon races on the playground before it was time to go home.
Thank you to all the parents who came to the service and who came to watch our egg-straordinary activities in the afternoon.
Happy Easter everyone!

Spellathon!
Thu 29 Mar 2018Well done to all of the children who took part in the Spellathon earlier this term. The final bits of sponsor money have been collected in and we are pleased to announce that a grand total of £619.70 has been raised from improving our spelling!
The children's council are currently deciding what this money should be spent on, and we will update you as soon as spending has been decided.
This is a phenomenal amount of money for a small school to raise and we are proud of each and every one of you for your hard work.

Year 3/4 Tag Rugby
Fri 23 Mar 2018On a slightly windy day, our year 3/4 Tag Rugby team set off to Oakham Rugby Club to take part in the RSSP Tag Rugby tournament. We were taking part in the 'Osprey' league, for slightly smaller teams. The children all played very well and there were many tries and lots of tagging. Mrs Ranson said she was very impressed with how well the children played as a team, working together to help each other get tags and get the ball across the line. After some hard-fought games we ended up coming 3rd. We were very proud of the children and how well they played.

All of the children came to the hall to share tea, coffee, squash and cake with those mums and relatives who were able to join us. It was lovely to have some aunts and grandmas, as well as mums and dads.
Thank you to all those who bought and made cakes to make the event so special.

Austin's Butterfly.... a lesson in resilience, perseverance and improving our work!
Tue 06 Mar 2018On Tuesday afternoon the whole school worked together on a project based on a project developing children's ability to give critique and feedback on work. This project is known to many in education as 'Austin's Butterfly'.
Before we came together as a school, each class was asked to try and draw their own butterfly. They were also shown a picture and asked to recreate it as best as they could. For class 1 this was an owl; for class 2, a wolf; and for class 3, some flowers.
We then met together as a school and watched and talked through the clip of 'Austin's Butterfly' which follows how a child in an American school was encouraged to develop and improve his pictures of a butterfly. We talked about which butterfly was closest to what we had drawn ourselves, and which one we would have been 'happy' with. We also talked about the critique and feedback that Austin was given as he drew each draft, and how this helped him. We also had a real focus on progress - part of our EPIC learning - and how we could see the progress that Austin had made over each draft as he looked and reviewed alongside his friends.
Then it was time to go back to the classrooms, reflect on our own first drafts, and see what we could do. This was not as easy as we thought it would be! We needed to focus on our own resilience and perseverance, making sure that we didn't give up when things got tricky. We also had to work on not being satisfied with 'good enough' and keep persevering to be even better. Persuading the children that this was not about creating a fantastic end product, but was about being able to see the journey through learning was easier said than done! However, it was a good opportunity for the children to reflect on their own and others work and to see what real progress could look like when we don't settle for average.
Below are some photos of the children hard at work. Pictures of some of the progress made will follow shortly.
