Read below to find out more about some of the different activities we have been getting up to; from sporting and musical activities, to visitors and 'wow' days. We are looking forward to helping our children 'explore and grow' further in 2025-26.

• Balance Bikes

  On Thursday our Reception children took part in their first balance bike training provided  by RCC. This is an opportunity for the children to learn some basic balance skills as a pre-cursor to learning to ride a 2 wheeled pedal-cycle. It was lovely to see how well the children concentrated and listened to their instructors, and there were lots of smiles and excited scooting up and down the school hall!

• Year 5/6 Osprey Football League Success!

  Our year 5/6 football team have worked had as a team, and we are very proud of them for placing third in the RCCSP Osprey Football League this week.

   

  We were very pleased to hear that the team had made it through to the finals for Rutland in the Year 5/6 Osprey Football League, and on Tuesday the team went to Uppingham to play 3 games to decide the final positions. 

   

  Each game was close, and after narrowly losing the first two games, the team won the third game, placing us third overall. A huge thank you to Miss Bevins and Mrs Ranson for accompanying the team and providing coaching and advice.

   

   

• Year 5/6 Bikeability

  Eight of our year 5/6 children took part in Bikeability this week. It was fantastic to see them grow in confidence from learning skills on the playground, to venturing out into the village on the first day; and then taking to the busier roads of Oakham today for their level 2 training. The children have learnt about good road positioning, how to signal and the importance of checking over their shoulder, as well as a quick bit of bike maintenance. 

   

  All of the children achieved level 1 and 2. Well done to all concerned. 

   

  The children are always delightful in school - but I am always pleased when their behaviour has been complimented by those from outside school. The two instructors told me that the group were fantastic, great company and beautifully behaved. What a credit you are to the school and to your parents.

• Harvest Festival

  A huge thank you to all of the parents, grandparents and friends of the school who were able to join us in Friday afternoon in the school hall for our Harvest Festival Celebration.

   

  The Thanksgiving assembly started with our newly formed choir singing 'O Re Mi', a Nigerian High-life Welcome Song, unaccompanied and in two parts - particularly impressive after only a few rehearsals!

   

  What followed was then alternate hymns for everyone to join in with, and presentations by each class. Aqua class shared the story of the Little Red Hen which they had been learning in their music lessons. There were few nerves from our youngest children, and they all joined in lustily with keeping the pulse and sharing some actions. Teal class shared their own special version of George Ezra's 'shotgun' - which had been altered to represent farming. There were great actions and enthusiastic singing of 'I'll be driving tractors....'! Finally Cobalt Class shared verses from Harvest poems they had written, with some beautiful imagery. 

   

  The assembly concluded with a rousing rendition of 'Everywhere around me', before FOEGS held their Harvest raffle. 

• No Pens Day

  Wednesday 3rd October was 'No Pens Day' in school. We still had to learn, but the teachers had to be creative in getting us learning with no writing implements!

   

  Aqua Class spent the day exploring the difference between villages and cities. In the morning they used all of the construction toys they could find to build a city in the classroom. After a break for some phonics activities and games, they then went out into the village in the afternoon to see if they could see signs of autumn and spot differences between Exton and the city they had built in the morning. Crunchy leaves, fallen branches and conkers aplenty were found, and the children enjoyed looking at a house being thatched as well.

   

  Teal Class started the day with practising spelling their surnames using playdough - it is always tricky when you have a long name! They then spent some time practising explaining how they know what different 2 and 3 digit numbers represent in maths, before practising aural story telling. In the afternoon there was some PE and RE was done through craft.

   

  Cobalt Class, meanwhile, were creating a 'play in a day'. In groups they took on a script for Fantastic Mr Fox, creating a couple of scenes per group. Not only did they have to assign parts and practise performing, but they also had to create their costumes.

   

  After some debate with the younger children, staff were allowed to use pens to do the registers - we had to explain 'legal documents' to them!

   

  What a fantastic creative day we had!

   

  

• RLT KS2 Athletics Festival

  A huge well done to everyone who took part in the RLT athletics day last week. It is safe to say the day was a hit with everyone involved and the staff couldn’t have been more proud of the effort and enthusiasm shown by the children. It was lovely to see the whole of ks2 come together to support and cheer on their fellow school mates - often chanting and clapping so loudly that they were nearly hoarse!  It was also great to see so many children from our school supporting those from other schools and vice versa, definitely a fab display of sportsmanship!

   

  Throughout the day, the children enjoyed the opportunities to compete in multiple races - long distance, short sprints, and the obstacle race - whilst also having the chance to try new activities, such as long jump, howler javelin and tennis ball throw. Every member of the school had a go at something and the stands were buzzing with excitement as they came back and told us all about it.

   

  As staff, we would like to thank the children for their responsible and reliable attitudes and behaviour. It was fantastic to be able to let the children explore their activities independently, knowing they were behaving so well. It was also lovely to see the children looking after each other and making sure everyone was happy and confident to have a go. What a wonderful bunch you all are!

  

• Peterborough Diocese Schools Service

  On Thursday 27th September, four pupils from Cobalt Class joined Mrs Davis and Mrs Wingrove to represent the school at the annual Peterborough Diocese Schools Service. The children were a credit to the school and were beautifully behaved throughout the service, listening carefully in the prayers, readings and talk and singing lustily in the hymns accompanied by the cathedral organ and a brass band. 

   

  We discovered that we were also the school that was on the Diocesan Prayer rota for the day - so not only were all schools in the Diocese prayed for in the cathedral on 227th October, but all around the Diocese, in all of the churches, our school was being remembered and prayed for.

• World Peace Day - One day, one choir - sing for peace.

  Friday 21st September was World Peace Day and across the world many schools, choirs, groups and organisations were joining together to sing a song for peace. It didn't matter what song was chosen, as long as it helped us to think about peace. 

   

  We had signed up to the 'One day, one choir' website and undertook to sing a song of peace. Our celebration assembly therefore ended with a rendition of 'I've got peace like a river' - a song we had been learning in our Songs of Praise assemblies. As always, the children sang beautifully, with a rousing crescendo through the three verses: 'I've got peace like a river' sung quietly; 'I've got love like the ocean' a little louder; and 'Ive got joy like a mountain' sung joyfully!

   

  We are very lucky to live in such as safe and peaceful place as Rutland, and it is good for us to remember and think about those who are not as fortunate as us, and perhaps do not have such peace in their lives. 

   

  Well done to all the children for fantastic singing. 

• Year 5/6 Football

  After school on Tuesday 18th September, our year 5/6 football team set off to play their first matches of the season at Uppingham Community College as part of the Osprey League. 

   

  Under the tutelage of Miss Bevins and Mrs Ranson, the team got off to a fantastic start in the league. They played together well and won their first game 2-0! After a break (when the team decided to play football!) they had their second game, which they again won - this time 3-1. What a fantastic start!

   

  A huge thank you to Miss Bevins and Mrs Ranson for accompanying the team and to the parents for their support in transporting the children to and from Uppingham. 

   

  This looks to be the start of a great tournament!

  

• Crime Day!

  On Monday 17th September we had a fantastic 'wow' day!

   

  A crime had been committed at school over the weekend and the hall laptop had gone missing. There were three suspects, and lots of clues, and it was the children's job to work out who the culprit was. 

   

  Each class had time to investigate the crime scene and collect clues, before developing their investigative skills to look at finger prints, shoe prints, handwriting and chromatography.

   

  Meanwhile, back in the classrooms, wanted posters were created and newspaper reports were written about what had happened. Some of these will be added to the website here - watch this space!

   

  Finally, at the end of the school day, we all gathered in the school hall, to name our lead suspect and reveal the culprit. Despite Miss Bevins having borrowed Mrs Davis' keys over the weekend, there were no clues relating to her, and so she was soon ruled out. Was it Miss Lynch or Miss Bell? Finger prints pointed to Miss Lynch and footprints to Miss Bell. CCTV was bought in to help, and the culprit was finally revealed as... Miss Lynch! However, it was obvious that she had been sleepwalking, and the ripped note, when accompanied by the CCTV, was soon found to show that she had put the laptop in the cupboard for safe keeping. She had forgotten as she had been asleep! A quick search found the missing item to the relief of everyone, and particularly Miss Lynch, who was let off with a warning and advice not to work so hard!
