Year 5/6 Rounders
Wed 26 Jun 2019Our year 5/6 children all took part in the RCC rounders tournament on Wednesday. They showed fantastic team work and sportsmanship, supporting each other and congratulating the other teams when they scored a good rounder or hit the ball.
We played two matches, and both closely fought, but unfortunately the other teams pipped us to the post.
As ever, behaviour was impeccable and Miss Bevins was very proud of them all.

Year 5/6 Sleepover
Fri 21 Jun 2019What a fantastic two days we had with year 5/6!
We woke on Thursday with our prayers answered, to find glorious sunshine for our day at Rutland Water. The children all arrived at school excited and ready to go!
Thursday morning was spent on Rutland Water building rafts and kayaking. After wrestling their way into their wet suits, the children were faced with their first challenge. Split into groups of four, and given four barrels, four ropes and four pieces of wood, the children were tasked with making a raft. After ten minutes of experimenting, they were given a few pointers on how to make a successful raft, and soon we had four rafts ready to launch. The next challenge was to get them into the water, with all the team on top and paddle around two buoys before returning to the shore. The winning team was the one that managed this and were the first to dismantle their raft. Many fell in, but lots of fun was had!
Kayaking followed with more team games. Those who managed to work together as a team found that they were much more successful! We finished our water sports with a water Mexican wave and a jump from the pontoon for those who wanted to.
Once we were showered and dried it was time for lunch and some down time. The children enjoyed exploring the bushes and trees by Rutland Water, as well having the opportunity to try out some of their playground gymnastics in a new location! We then went over to the outdoor gym for a bit more exercise - the staff even joined in! After a couple of games of Capture the Flag it was time to wend our way back to school.
The children were very keen to set up their beds, even though it was only 4pm! A little bit of Dr Who (following their English topic!) and there was time for a bit more running around on the school field before tea. Following pizza, a quick whistle stop lesson on the Vikings before our trip to York on Friday and sandwich making for Friday lunch, the children got ready for bed and climbed into sleeping bags to watch Roald Dahl's 'The Witches'.
Teeth brushed and ready for bed, we began to settle down for the night at 10.45pm. Most were asleep by midnight, with the last few lulled to sleep by the gentle tones of Stephen Fry reading Harry Potter!
Apart from some gentle reminders that it wasn't time to get up at 4am and 5am(!), all was quiet until we got up ready for our trip to York at 6.30am. A quick breakfast was had before we got on the coach at 7.30am.
On arrival at Jorvik we were met by a Viking, who was somewhat surprised at how tired we all were - this was a theme across the day! The children enjoyed finding out more about Viking York, though were not enamoured of the authentic smells! We then walked to Jorvik DIG for a workshop on Viking medicines -this made us very glad that we live in modern times!
By now breakfast seemed a long time ago and the children were all a little 'hangry' (a mixture of hungry and short tempered!) so we stopped in a pretty park on our way to the National Railway Museum to eat our lunch.
The children enjoyed exploring the different trains at the Railway Museum and being allowed to go and explore in small groups. It was lovely to be caught by an American visitor to be told that he was a retired teacher, and was so impressed with how lovely our children were - how kind and respectful they were to each other, and to other visitors to the museum. We wouldn't expect anything less of them!
Soon it was time to leave... we were all shattered after a busy two days! Some children were asleep before we left York, and twelve out of the fifteen were asleep for much of the drive back.
A huge thank you to all of the staff who accompanied some of or all of the trip. Your support was much appreciated. We would not be able to give our children such lovely experiences if it were not for the fantastic staff team we have here at Exton.
The final word should be to the children. I am so proud to be your headteacher. You were a delight to be with (even when you were awake late at night!). Your good humour, kindness, courteousness and independent spirits shone through. You are all a credit to your parents and to the school.

RLT KS1 Athletics Festival
Thu 23 May 2019What a fantastic day we had yesterday at Corby Stadium for the RLT KS1 athletics festival! The weather was kind to us, and the sun shone down as we arrived at the athletics track.
During the morning, the boys took part in their field events: the tennis ball throw, target beanbag throwing, and standing jump. The girls, meanwhile, were taking part in their track events. In the afternoon, events were reversed.
All of the children tried their hardest in all the events they took part in, and should be proud of how they got on. One or two people even won their heats and made it to the finals! The level of sportsmanship was fantastic, with all of the children not only encouraging each other, but also cheering for people from other schools. A particular congratulations to Evie for coming second overall in the year 2 girls bean bag throw, Bibi for coming first in the year 1 girls tennis ball throw, Howie for coming third in the year 2 boys tennis ball throw and Pippa for coming third in the year 2 girls 40m sprint.
A huge thank you to all the children for a fantastic day, and to the staff who accompanied us for all their hard work.
There are a few pictures below - but we were so busy, it was hard to get many!

Netball
Sat 18 May 2019What a fantastic group of year 5/6 netballers we have! We have so far taken part in 3 out of 4 meetings with our 'league' of schools. Each week our team have got better and better, and more and more confident. We have been working hard on our 'grr' and being a little more assertive in our playing - the politeness of our children always shines through, and to begin with we were very happy to give the ball away rather than reach in to grab it! With some support from our expert netball players on the staff, we have worked on being more assertive in going for the ball and have raised our level of play enormously. Nets have been scored by four of our players, who were delivered the ball by some great teamwork. Our footwork is second to none! Our last meet is next week. Good luck to all concerned! -
Class Dojo Afternoon Tea
Sat 04 May 2019Mrs Davis had a lovely time on Friday afternoon with the children who had chosen to have afternoon tea with the headteacher as one of their ClassDojo rewards. Mrs Almond made some lovely cucumber sandwiches, which were served with cakes and juice. There was lots of chatter about what we were looking forward to over the long weekend to come, and what we had been up to over the Easter holiday. -
Hard at work already!
Mon 29 Apr 2019Term 5 has started with a focus on being responsible. The children have been talking about how to be responsible for their learning and how to be responsible for the world around us.
Mrs Davis found lots of evidence of children working hard and taking responsibility for their learning this morning as she walked through the school! Please see the attached photographs for the evidence!

New Roof!
Sun 14 Apr 2019We were very excited to hear at the end of term that we had been successful in a bid for money to replace the school roof.
Scaffolding will be going up during the Easter holidays, and work will begin at the beginning of term 5 - hopefully completed by mid June. Although this means that the outdoor play area for Aqua class will have to be rearranged a little, this is only for the short term. Hopefully this work will ensure that the school is watertight for a few more years, and that funds that have had to be diverted to repairs can be spent on teaching and learning.
We look forward to welcoming the roofers on-site and hope that the disruption to the school and the local community will be as small as possible.

Easter in a Day
Tue 09 Apr 2019Easter in a Day happened a little earlier in the last week of term this year, as our Year 4 were off on their residential on the Wednesday.
This year our Easter service took place in Exton Church. We enjoyed the walk up to church in the spring sunshine, before Cobalt class led us in a re-telling of the Easter story. This was interspersed with Easter songs which helped bring the story to life. Rev. Anthony then shared some thoughts with us about Easter before we joined together in singing 'Lord of the Dance'. The church had very kindly laid on refreshments, and 'Real' Easter eggs for each of the children, from the church, were waiting back at school.
Back at school there was time to decorate our eggs before lunch, ready for the afternoon competitions.
The afternoon kicked off with our now traditional egg rolling in the school hall. The competitions were fiercely battled and the children did well to move out of the way of the rolling eggs when they came in their direction. A huge thank you to all the parents who had made sure all eggs were hard boiled!
We then moved outside for the FOEGS Easter egg hunt, which was laid out by Miss Lynch and Mrs Honan. There was much searching, but everyone found their three eggs, and one child from each class was lucky enough to find an egg with a 'golden ticket'.
The day was rounded off with our egg and spoon races.... no prizes this time, but playing for the honour of crossing the finishing line with an intact egg!
What a cracking day!

Spotlight Dance
Thu 04 Apr 2019What an amazing two nights we had at the Spotlight Dance Showcase at the Corn Exchange in Stamford. We must be one of the few schools who have almost all of KS2 performing at once!
This year our dance was based on James Bond. There were some fantastic moves, and it was lovely to see all of our year 4, 5 and 6 taking part and working together to produce a truly amazing dance routine.
Not only did we have many positive and congratulatory comments from people about the dance, but the behaviour backstage, and during rehearsals was impeccable.
Congratulations to all concerned, and a huge thank you to Hayley for choreographing and to Miss Bevins for accompanying the children on both evenings.

Understanding Christianity Day
Tue 02 Apr 2019What an amazing day we had on Tuesday at Langham School!
It was lovely to partner up with Langham Primary School on Tuesday to explore one of our RE resources together. Staff from both schools worked together to create a range of activities that would enable children to explore what Christians believe and how Christians worship through music, art and discussion.
The day started with a shared assembly where we sang together and shared a thought for the day. We then split into mixed age, and mixed school, groups. There was a rotation of three activities through the day focusing on exploring Christian belief through 'Big Questions' and art, music and discussion activities. Not only was there some great RE going on, but the children also had the opportunity to put the 6 Rs that we focus on into action.
At the end of the day the two school congregated together again in the school hall to sing some of the songs we had learnt, and to tie the day together. It was lovely to move from a hall of separated blue and red tops to a mix of colours for the final assembly as children sat with newfound friends. The sound of both schools singing was quite moving!
A huge thank you to the staff and children at Langham, who were so welcoming to us all, sharing resources, classrooms and ideas. A particular thank you should go to Allyson Ford (who some parents will remember as she taught at Exton briefly a couple of years ago). Mrs Ford is the SENDCO and RE coordinator at Langham, and the day was her 'brainchild'.
Whilst we learnt a lot of RE through the day, we also learnt much about developing our 6 Rs and our social skills in being in a new environment. The Exton staff were particularly proud of all the positive comments that we have received from Langham staff about how lovely the children from Exton & Greetham CE Primary are. We sometimes forget how lucky we are to be part of such a special school family - and this was commented on by many of those who met our children during the day.
It was great to be able to work with another school in this way.... thinking hats are now on for what our next project could be!
