Latest News

Read below to find out more about some of the different activities we have been getting up to; from sporting and musical activities, to visitors and 'wow' days. We are looking forward to helping our children 'explore and grow' further in 2025-26.

  • Bible Assembly

    Wed 16 Mar 2016 M Davis

In our assembly on Wednesday this week, Rev Marcus gave out Children's Bibles to children who had joined the school in the last few years.

The churches of Exton and Greetham have always bought a children's Bible for each child who attends the school, and as we have had quite a few children join the school, there were a lot of Bibles to give out!

The children all enjoyed looking at their Bibles. Class 1 were so excited, that they chose to read the Bible during choosing time (see the pictures below!).

  • Police Visit to Year 5/6

    Wed 16 Mar 2016 M Davis

We were very pleased to welcome Steve, our local PCSO, into school to talk to the year 5/6 children. Steve came to enable the children to get to know what his job entails in Rutland, and to allow the children to understand more about policing in general.

There were lots of interesting questions about crime, as well as discovering that police spend most time in Rutland helping people. We are lucky to live in a county with a fairly low crime rate, so more time is spent helping at accidents and working in the community.

We also got to know a bit more about Steve, who used to be a farmer before becoming a PCSO. His favourite part of the job is being able to help people.

As our year 5/6 children look towards becoming more independent, especially as they travel to and from secondary school in the near future, it was good to get to know Steve better and know that he and his colleagues will always be there to help if we are afraid or need assistance.

  • World Book Day

    Wed 02 Mar 2016 M Davis

World Book Day was celebrated one day early at Exton & Greetham School in order to ensure that we got a full day of reading and writing activities.

The day started with an opportunity for the whole school to share their costumes and favourite books, with staff reading their own favourite stories to the children. Mrs Fowler read 'Little Rabbit Foo-Foo' which is a favourite of the whole school, Mrs Wingrove read 'Monkey Puzzle' by Julia Donaldson, Mrs Davis read 'Marvin who wanted more', and Mr Marks read us a story about a bear who had lost his hat. We were a little suspicious that the rabbit in Mr Marks' story came to a sticky end!

We then worked together as a whole school on writing alliterative phrases and sentences, eventually turning these into tongue twisters, based on Peter Piper.

The afternoon was spent writing more poetry. While KS1 finished off their tongue twisters, KS2 were able to create a poem of their choice. We ended up with a selection of Haiku, Tanka, Kennings, Shape Poems, Rhyming poetry and Free verse. These were then bound together to make a commemorative book of poetry for the day.

We finished the day by performing our poems in the hall.

A huge thank you to Mrs Fowler for organising our day of Book and Poetry Wonder!

  • KS1 Multiskills

    Wed 24 Feb 2016 M Davis
Class 1 had a fabulous time at the KS1 Multiskills festival. We fielded two teams who participated well and tried their best at all the different activities. Mrs Fowler, Mrs Heywood and Miss Lynch said that all the children were great ambassadors for the school; trying hard, behaving beautifully and being great sportsmen and women. Well done to all involved!
  • Rutland Swimming Gala

    Wed 10 Feb 2016 M Davis

Some of our year 5/6 children set off on Monday to take part in the Rutland School's Swimming Gala. Polly represented the year 5 girls, whilst Georgia and Olly went to represent Year 6. After some closely fought heats for all three, both Georgia and Olly made it through to the backstroke finals for year 6. Georgia then came 5th overall, and Olly 6th overall. Congratulations to all three children. You should be proud of yourselves.

A huge thank you to Mrs Ranson for taking the children, and to parents for trekking over to Uppingham to pick them up.

  • County Cross Country

    Sat 06 Feb 2016 M Davis

A huge congratulations to the three very brave children who turned up in wet, windy & very muddy conditions on Saturday to represent the school at the Cross Country. Jess came 43rd in the Year 3 girls race, and Drew came 57th in the Year 3 boys race. Both came in at a good steady pace. Ella came in 19th in the Year 4 girls and even managed a sprint finish up the very muddy hill!

Mrs Ranson was very proud of all three children and said they were a credit to the school, not least in turning up in such horrid conditions.

    Well done!

  • Puzzle Challenge Day

    Fri 29 Jan 2016 M Davis

On Friday our brains were working hard as we were visited by the Puzzle Company who came to help us explore using maths practically.

The children had to work together in groups to solve different puzzles and challenges, all of which made use of our maths skills. We soon worked out that working together was much the best way to complete each challenge quickly! We certainly had the opportunity to practise our independent skills, ability to compromise, and develop resilience when we couldn't solve the problem first time.

A great time was had by all!

  • Pantomime Trip

    Thu 07 Jan 2016 M Davis

On Thursday the whole school set off to Nottingham to the Theatre Royal to see Aladdin.

It was a magical performance, with a huge animatronic snake and flying carpets to amaze us! We enjoyed all the jokes and songs. Favourite moments for the children included not only the snake and flying carpets, but also when Widow Twanky's leg fell off by accident and all the cast got the giggles!

Ice creams were devoured at the interval, before we settled down to find out if Aladdin won the day. All was well in the end, although there were some scary moments along the way.

Two of our children even got to go up on the stage and meet Widow Twanky (Christopher Biggins). Harvey played a big bass drum and Skye played a triangle and we all sang along. I think we gave the biggest cheer when our school was mentioned too!

After our own pantomime and nativity performances before Christmas, it is great to be able to take the children to see what can be achieved in a professional production, from the special effects, to musical accompaniment from a band. However, We are sure that they  must have tiptoed into the back of Exton & Greetham School Hall to steal a couple of our jokes, as we spotted some of the same ones!

  • Christmas In a Day

    Thu 17 Dec 2015 M Davis

Thursday 17th December saw Exton & Greetham CE Primary School's traditional 'Christmas in a Day'.

After arriving at school, the children put on their hats and coats and we set off through the village for our Carol Service at Exton Church. The older children took the congregation through the different parts of the story of the Nativity, while reinforcing the true meaning of Christmas. The younger children created a tableau of the Nativity at the front of the church. This was interspersed with a range of Christmas Carols, finishing with a rousing 'Hark the Herald' with added descant! Thank you to Mr Davis for coming to accompany the carols on the organ.

We then walked back to school for a quick playtime and some craft activities, before meeting in the hall for Christmas Dinner, where we were joined by the Nursery. Well done to Lizzie for serving up over 70 Christmas Dinners!

Once we had eaten our fill, we had another quick playtime, before changing into our party clothes and going to the hall for our Christmas party. Thank you Mrs Fowler and Mr Marks for leading the games, including our traditional '6 corners' game, before our special visitor arrived!

Father Christmas bought presents for all of the children, and had to answer lots of questions from the reception children, who were very interested in his reindeer!

It was then time for a quick rest, before Disco Steve began the Christmas Disco! Many thanks to FOEGS for organising this and sorting decorations and refreshments.

    Phew! What a busy day.

  • Christmas Performances

    Wed 16 Dec 2015 M Davis

The children did two fantastic performances for Christmas this year.

Class 1 put on the 'Wriggly Nativity' which gave them plenty of reason to wriggle and jiggle! The singing was brilliant, as was the dancing, and every word was clear. It was lovely to see every child on the stage, each with their own words to say. What little stars they are!

KS2 then put on their annual pantomime. This year's offering was 'Sleeping Beauty', penned by Mr Marks, Mrs Davis and Mrs Lowe. The children played their parts brilliantly, and there was much laughter ringing around the hall. From the youngest year 3 to the oldest year 6, there were some super performances, and definitely a few thespians in the making!

Some photographs of the younger children are attached below.
