FOEGS Christmas Fayre
Mon 17 Dec 2018What a fantastic evening we had last night in the school hall!
The hall was buzzing with lots of children, parents, family and friends, all busy visiting the different stalls. Whether it was the Christmas games of: Guess What's in the Stocking, Find the Snowman's Nose, Where in the world is Santa? or Pin the nose on Rudolf; or the stalls - the tombola, second hand stall, face-painting, cake stall or craft stall - there was something for everyone.
A huge thank you to all those who turned up to run a stall or paint faces, as well as those who helped set up and tidy away. It was a great team effort, and we are very pleased to announce that over £270 was raised - a fantastic achievement for a little school!

Christmas Performances
Thu 13 Dec 2018Once again, the school hall was filled with the sound of music, laughter and fantastic acting for out annual Nativity and Pantomime performances. With excellent audiences for both performances, the children were proud to show off what they had achieved.
The nativity - this year entitled 'A Midwife Crisis' - was beautifully performed, with all of the children taking a role. The midwife was very bossy, and it was quite clear that 'no-one ever listens to a donkey!' Poor Steve the donkey! He knew just where to look for the baby, but the Midwife was not listening. Fortunately, all was well in the end. With fantastic solo singing from our Star to the exuberant dancing of the sheep, the performance was memorable for all the right reasons! Well done to all of Aqua and Cobalt classes, and to their teachers and TAs for all their hard work behind the scenes.
'Snow White and the many, many, many dwarves' followed, and the audience was soon joining in with the traditional 'oh yes it is' and booing and hissing the wicked stepmother. There were some great character performances from the cast, engaging the audience from the beginning. There was enthusiastic dancing to songs, and '5,6,7,8' will live long in many people's memories! Again, the staff behind the scenes worked hard to enable the children to show off their talents.
Congratulations to both casts for their confident performances. Perhaps we saw a glimpse of some future Oscar or BAFTA winners gracing our stage.....

Exton T Party
Tue 11 Dec 2018This year, for the first time, we were invited to provide a 'choir' to entertain the attendees of the Exton T Party in the village hall. Cobalt class rose to the challenge, and after selecting their favourite carols - both traditional and more modern- they set off down to the village hall.
The assembled people were invited to join us in our singing, and there was lusty singing of Hark the Herald, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Away in a Manger and The Virgin Mary before we finished with a rendition of We Wish you a Merry Christmas.
We really enjoyed joining together with the local community.

Carols Around the Tree
Fri 07 Dec 2018The annual 'Carols Around the Tree' event was held in the school hall for the first time this year. There was a good gathering of friends from the community and school families and traditional carols were lustily sung. The advantage of being inside was having a piano accompaniment and therefore Mrs Davis not starting Silent Night too high!
The evening finished with mince pies, tea, coffee and hot chocolate provided by FOEGS. What a fantastic start to our Christmas activities!

Basketball Final
Thu 06 Dec 2018We were really pleased to be able to enter two teams for the Rutland Basketball Tournament at USSC this term. All our year 5 and 6 pupils took part. They displayed some great teamwork, playing with determination and encouraging each other. There was some skilled basketball on display with impressive dribbling, passing and shooting. At one stage both teams were playing matches on adjacent courts and both won! One o four team won their League so were invited back to play for the TOP 8 places last Thursday. Again, they were a credit to the school. They narrowly missed out on a final placing when, after a close match against Brooke Priory School, the result had to be decided on by a penalty shootout. All 8 team members bravely stepped up to take a shot and only missed out on a 'sudden death' basket. They finished an amazing 6th out of 37 teams.
Well done to all.

Singing at Oakhouse Residential Home
Tue 04 Dec 2018Today nine of our children went on a special visit to Oakhouse Residential Home in Greetham to sing some of their nativity songs to the residents. The children sang beautifully and the residents enjoyed hearing some of the songs from 'A Midwife Crisis'. It is lovely to be able to take some of the Christmas cheer from school out into the community! -
Year 5/6 Basketball Tournament
Sun 25 Nov 2018All of year 5/6 went to represent the school in the Year 5/6 RCC Basketball competition on Thursday. It was fantastic that all of the children were able to take part in two teams.
Mrs Ranson and Mrs Wingrove reported some excellent playing and sportsmanship, with the children working really well in both teams to score. A good score is not only down to those who shoot the baskets, but also down to those who get the ball to them and help with defending!
One of our teams won their group, and so will be returning in a fortnight for the finals. Well done and good luck to all those involved!

Children In Need
Fri 16 Nov 2018On Friday 16th November, the children in school were all covered in spots! Fortunately, this was not an epidemic, but the children's way of celebrating and raising money for Children In Need.
This year the Children's Council and Miss Barker are in charge of our fundraising. After a meeting full of ideas (some of which have been filed for future charity events!) the Children's Council decided that the children would dress in spots for the day, and spend the day baking and carrying out an inter-class Bakeoff, before selling cakes at the end of the day. Coppers were also collected and a beautiful Pudsey cake, donated by a parent, was raffled for Children in Need.
As I type, totals are still being calculated. Everyone gave generously, and we know that funds raised will go to help children who are most in need.
A huge thank you to Miss Barker and the children's council for all of their hard work.

Remembrance
Sun 11 Nov 2018On Friday 9th November, Cobalt class went down to the Exton War Memorial to join with the local community in an Act of Remembrance, 100 years after the end of World War 1. The children have been writing poems in school linked to the theme of Remembrance and some of these were shared and left at the War Memorial, alongside a wreath from the school. Below are the three that were read at the War Memorial.
In November, We Remember
One bullet from a young Serbian’s gun
Triggered the spark for World War One.How did one shot prove so lethal
As to kill 17 million people?
How could this war spill so much blood? It all began in August 1914
As the trenches were dug in France
And the war took its toll.On the ground, in the air and at sea.
My ancestors fought during the war
One of them was a famous pilotBut that doesn’t mean I can’t remember
Those other innocent souls who gave their lives
For King and country.100 years hence we remember
Remember, remember every November.
Daniel
In November, We Remember
In November, we remember
All of those who sacrificed their lives for us.In fields poppies grow,
Between the crosses row on row,
We remember the dead and alive,Here we lie.
From falling hands
We shall not sleep,
In the deep,
Let sunset glow,Short days ago.
Inch by inch,
Row on row,Never forget,
Always remember,
Every November.
Leighton
Thank you for everything
Give thanks to everyone who saved,
Making freedom not a dream, but a reality today,Help us to save the ones who save us,
Filling our lives with kindness and love.Let the poppy grow as faith grows in us,
As it is not only a symbol, but shows
Everybody the world has lost,
Give faith to those who have faith in us,The people who sacrifice their lives.
The haunted minds shall never be forgotten,
For they are the people who made freedom,
As their lives were not just lost,
They sacrificed mind, heart and soul.Drew
In a term when we are particularly focussing on Respect, it was lovely to receive emails and messages from some of those who attended who commended the children on their behaviour and the respect that they showed.
