  • Yr 5/6 Enterprise Day

    Thu 20 Sep 2012

Six of our able mathematicians for year 5/6 were invited to join with children from other local primary schools at CBEC for an Enterprise day on 20th September 2012.

They spent the day working on a project to design and sell a mug in aid of a charity. This involved not only choosing a charity and creating a design on the computer, but also working out the profit margins and percentages, taking into account the costs of production and the donations to the charity. They also looked at how profits and percentages would be affected by giving a discount for bulk buying 100 or 1000 units.

All the children excelled themselves, with some happy to take lead roles in groups of children from other local schools. There was much interest and discussion about the profit margins and how they changed. Let's hope these future aspiring Alan Sugar's remember their little primary school when they earn their first million!

  • Voces8 Vocal Workshop

    Fri 14 Sep 2012
On Friday 14th September Key Stage 2 were lucky enough to be invited to take part in a workshop lead by Voces8 at Oakham School chapel. After warming up our voices and our bodies, we had the opportunity to hear the group sing in close harmony, both classical and more modern music. We then learnt a song about monkeys where we got to show off our dancing skills, before learning to sing Jessie J's song 'Pricetag' in 3 parts.

We have been asked if we would like to help pilot a new singing resource for primary schools from January. Listen out for our rhythm and voice improvising after Christmas!

  • Plastic Bottle Greenhouse

    Thu 13 Sep 2012
Thanks to a willing band of adult helpers the roof is now on our plastic bottle greenhouse. Thank you to all who collected bottles.

We still need to complete the two triangular ends in the roof. If anyone has any sheets of perspex or corrugated plastic that could be donated for this purpose we would be very grateful. The two triangular sides that we need to cover are 185cm along the bottom by 135cm. If you can help, please contact the school office.

  • Meeting the Queen

    Wed 13 Jun 2012
On Wednesday 13th June eight children and two staff from school went to Burghley House for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. After a cloudy start to the day, the sun gradually came out and we had a super day. After a quick explore of the site, we found a good position, right next to the fence where the queen would pass by on her way to lunch, and with a good view of her tree planting. There were a few false helicopter sightings before the maroon helicopter finally came in to land and the Queen emerged wearing pale turquoise. Much waving of flags ensued, and we were lucky enough to see the Queen close up as she drove by to the place where she was having lunch. To Georgia's relief it was also time for us to have our lunch! We were able to get a good position to see the Queen leave as well, and joined in with an enthusiastic singing of the national anthem. We had time to explore some of the tents, and even spotted our bunting on the Rutland Sailability boat, as well as listening to some super music from military bands and local schools. After an ice cream we were able to watch the aerial acrobatics of the blades, before spitfire and hurricane planes arrived to give their display.

A happy, but weary band of travellers from Exton were pleased to rest their feet on the coach on the way home!

A big thank you from Mrs Davis and Mrs Heywood for the super behaviour of the children who accompanied us, who were all a credit to the school and their parents.

    Photos to follow!

  • Jubilee Celebrations

    Fri 01 Jun 2012
Today in school we held our Jubilee Celebrations. During the week the children had been learning about Queen Elizabeth II and her family. Friday heralded a day dressed in red, white and blue!

The morning was spent recording our homegrown Jubilee song so that we could send a copy to the Queen. Many thanks to Elijah and Sammy for writing the letter which will accompany the CD.

We had a special Jubilee picnic lunch, held inside due to the weather, with sandwiches, pizza, sausage rolls and Jubilee jelly. This was an opportunity to wear our Jubilee crowns, and wave our homemade flags. In the afternoon we played a few party games before finally being able to get outside to enjoy the (late!) sunshine.

All the children were given a commemorative coin to take home as a souvenir.
  • Bunting!

    Fri 20 Apr 2012
We had been asked to take part in a county project linked to the Jubilee Flotilla on the Thames in June. Rutland Sailability will be sending a boat to take part in the event, and schools throughout Rutland have been asked to contribute six flags to be added to the bunting.
The whole school worked together for the afternoon to design our own flags, and look at how easy it was to create these using paper before using the material with which we have been provided.
Many designs down; six have now been selected to be made using the waterproof material. Photo to follow of the finished product!
