Tri-Golf
Fri 17 Jun 2016There are advantages to being a small school! The biggest of which is that we all get to take part and have a go.
On Friday, the whole of KS2 went to take part in the RSSP Tri-Golf competition. We split ourselves into two teams, a team of year 3-6 and a year 3 team. After a slightly damp start, we were soon taking part in a variety of golf skill based activities and trying to win as many points as possible for our teams.
It was a busy competition for all involved. Each station gave us two minutes to learn what to do, two minutes to practise, then 5 minutes to score points. The staff were trusted to score each station, which was a test of our times tables!
A huge congratulations to our year 3 team who came 5th out of all the schools in the year 3/4 competition. This was a great achievement, particularly as the other teams had year 4 pupils as well. The older team did well too, placing 6th amongst teams made up of entirely year 5/6 pupils. With our team comprising of years 3-6, they acquitted themselves well!
There was not a lot of time for photography, but there are few photographs below.

Creating Fanfares!
Wed 15 Jun 2016Mrs Davis enjoyed working with KS2 on Wednesday afternoon to develop their musical composition skills.
After listening to 'Fanfare for the Common Man' by Aaron Copland, the children spent some time discussing what it made them think of, before identifying the instruments and talking about the structure.
Year 3/4 for were then split into pairs and given xylophones, glockenspiels and metallophones and asked to create their own fanfares using a limited number of notes.
Year 5/6 were given a different challenge. They were given tone chimes, and so had to work closely together to create melodies and counter-melodies.
Successful fanfares were created and there was a lot of discussion about texture and sound.
The children had some fantastic musical ideas. Perhaps this activity was the beginning of some composing careers!
We will try to upload some examples to the website once we have compressed the files.

Class 1 Egleton Trip
Wed 08 Jun 2016Class 1 had a fantastic trip to Egleton on Wednesday and were able to go bug hunting and bird watching.
The weather was very kind to us, and once we had made sure that everybody had a sunhat, we set off on the coach.
The children enjoyed hunting for bugs and identifying different creatures, including some newts. They also enjoyed visiting the bird hides and spotting different creatures there.
The staff at Egleton were very complementary about the children and we were very proud of them all.
A huge thank you to Mrs Fowler for organising the trip, and to Mrs Jagger, Mrs Heywood and Miss Lynch who helped.

Exton Day
Mon 30 May 2016The weather looked kindly on Exton for Exton Day this year!
There were lots of activities to take part in around the village and it was lovely to have our marquee in a prime position again so that people could see what we have been up to at school.
As well as photographs, brochures and information about the school, there were also free 'dog themed' craft activities for children to join in and 'Splat the Rat' made another appearance.
It was lovely to catch up with some ex-pupils contemplating what they do post GCSEs, as well as meet some of the new pupils for September and prospective pupils, who couldn't wait to get out of their pushchairs to join in the craft! We hope in a few years they will join in the fun at Exton & Greetham Primary School too.
A huge thank you to the governors, staff, parents and pupils who joined the Head-teacher in erecting, taking down and manning the marquee and welcoming visitors.

Passover Assembly
Thu 28 Apr 2016On Thursday we welcomed Mrs Linda Edwards into school to talk to us about her Jewish faith and tell us about the festival of Passover. Mrs Edwards is one of our governors and we always look forward to her visits!
Mrs Edwards explained to us all the story of Passover and how the Jewish people escaped. We heard about the ten plagues, and discovered that there are quite a lot of first born children in our school! She showed us her special Seder plate and talked about all of the items it contained and their significance. We were able to taste some matzah, which is a bit like a cracker. Mrs Edwards told us what she and her family had done for their meal last Friday to mark the beginning of Passover. Some of us thought that playing hide and seek looking for the Afikoman (one of the matzah) sounded a lot of fun.
At the end of the assembly Mrs Edwards shared some cinnamon cakes with us, which are made without using any flour.
Thank you for coming to share your faith with us Mrs Edwards, we really enjoyed finding out about the Jewish religion.

KS2 Church Visit
Mon 25 Apr 2016Key Stage 2 walked up to St Peter and St Paul church in Exton on Monday to look at the building and meet with Marcus, the vicar, as part of their RE topic looking at places of worship.
Marcus spent some time with the children making sure that they knew all the different places in the church and their significance, before showing the children what happens in a Baptism Service.
There were some very perceptive questions for Marcus, before the children spent time looking more closely at the features of the building. They were then able to spend some time choosing something that interested them that they were then able to sketch. There were some beautifully detailed drawings which will be on display in the classroom in the near future.
Thank you to Marcus for finding the time to spend with us, and to Mrs Lowe for organising the visit.

The Queen's 90th Birthday Party
Thu 21 Apr 2016As part of their topic on Monarchs, Class 1 invited Key Stage 2 to join them in a birthday party for Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday.
The weather was kind, and we were able to set you tables outside.
Class 1 spent the morning making sandwiches and icing cakes for the birthday tea, as well as making crowns and place mats.
At half past two we all met in the playground for our birthday tea. Seated around a long table, we sang 'Happy Birthday' to Her Majesty before enjoying jam, cheese, cheese spread and chocolate spread sandwiches, crisps, cakes and some of Mrs Fowler's toffee crisp. There was even jelly to finish with.
We ended the meal by singing the National Anthem and having three cheers for the Queen.
A huge thank you to Mrs Fowler, Mrs Jagger, Mrs Heywood and Miss Lynch for organising the picnic. We hope the Queen had as good a day as we did!

Prayer Space
Wed 20 Apr 2016Marcus came to join us for our assembly this morning to officially open our Prayer Space at the rear of the school hall.
Cathy Dyson and our Faith Council have been working hard to create a space where children can come to spend time in quiet reflection, a place where they can think and pray if they wish. There is space to sit, fairy lights, a prayer wall, a prayer book and quiet activities to complete when in the prayer space.
We look forward to being able to use this area and to developing a similar area outside in the coming months.

Quicksticks Hockey
Tue 19 Apr 2016Weren't we lucky with the weather for the Quicksticks Hockey tournament?! We were really proud of all of the children who went to Uppingham today to represent the school in the year 3/4 and year 5/6 Rutland Quicksticks Hockey tournament.
The year 3/4 event took place during the morning, and Mrs Wardle was very proud of how the team worked together to do their best. There was some great defence and lots of attempts at scoring goals.
In the afternoon Mrs Davis was there to support the year 5/6 team. A big thank you to Ella for staying to play for year 5/6 to make up our team numbers. The children worked together really well, and quickly learnt from their early mistakes. We were very pleased to come second in our group which meant we were put through to play in the second round. We learnt that we needed to be a bit more confident in attacking the ball, so we had a quick 'roar' before we started each game! Georgia thinks we should create an 'Exton Hacka'! Watch this space! We were very proud to come 8th overall out of the 14 teams that attended.
As ever all the children were fantastic company, a credit to the school and showed excellent sportsmanship. The unexpected sunshine was a bonus!

KS2 Brazil Day
Tue 12 Apr 2016What an exciting end to a topic! KS2 spent the first week of term putting the finishing touches to their topic on Brazil.Celebrations came to a head on Tuesday with a chance to be part of a home-grown Samba band, as well as craft activities and some cookery. Mrs Davis led a Samba session using the Rutland Music Hub Samba kit. We learnt about putting different rhythms together to create polyrhythms, about ostinato rhythms, and how Samba bands are led using signals from a whistle (or Apito). The hardest part was keeping a steady pulse: once we had mastered this we found it much easier! In the afternoon Mrs Lowe helped the children cook some tradition Brazilian coffee biscuits.By the end of the week Mr Marks had helped the children put the finishing touches to their models of carnival floats, which enabled the children to develop both their art and DT skills. It was a great way to end a topic and a lot of fun was had by all.
