Year 5 Inspiring Scientists Day
Mon 24 Jun 2024The year 5 children had am amazing day today at Casterton College alongside year 5 children from other catchment schools. The day was spent exploring scientific ideas and carrying out experiments. The children came back buzzing and full of ideas. Thank you to Mrs Larratt and Miss Mullan for accompanying them, and to Casterton College for the fantastic opportunity.

RLT Music Festival
Fri 21 Jun 2024The sun shone down on us for the Music Festival this year... sun cream and sun hats were the order of the day!
The music festival is always a highlight of the year for us, especially as we help to lead it and put everything together. This year we were again at Cottesmore Academy, and our year 5/6 children joined with 350 other children from across all of the other schools in the Rutland Learning Trust.
The Festival began with a shared 'rap' before the children were split into their three colour groups. Each group (containing four schools) took turns performing on the performance stage, whilst the other groups could attend the activities on offer. These included: making musical instruments, big art, football skills, an inflatable assault course, festival games, golf and face painting, amongst other things.
We were in the 'red' group, who were second to take to the stage. We performed our two songs brilliantly, with clear diction and tuneful melodies, accompanied by a backing track and live accompaniment from Dylan on the piano.
As well as performances by the children, there were performances by some parents from one of the other RLT schools. The afternoon rounded off with the RLT Staff band, with Mrs Davis on the piano and singing.
What an amazing day - we can't wait for next year!

RLT Swimming Gala
Thu 20 Jun 2024Mrs Ranson took a team of eight to represent the school in the RLT swimming gala this year at Oakham School swimming pool.
She was very impressed with all of the children, especially as there were many children there from other schools who attend swimming clubs outside of school. We came away with our best medal haul ever - with 7 medals in total. What stars you all are!

Egyptian Day
Tue 18 Jun 2024When you can't get to a museum, the next best thing is to get a museum experience in! However, our Egyptian day was more than just a museum visit. The children from Teal and Cobalt classes had the opportunity to meet an Egyptian embalmer, who took them through the process of embalming a body - it was quite gory!
There were then a range of activities to be done throughout the day, including writing on papyrus, playing Egyptian games and exploring Egyptian artefacts. The children also worked in groups to use currency to build an Egyptian town. They had to choose how to spend their money, and then see how well their town fared against unpredicted world events!
A huge thank you to Mrs Redshaw for arranging the day and to Historic Workshops for facilitating all of the activities.

RLT Writing Competition
Fri 14 Jun 2024This year, every pupil took part in the RLT 500 words writing competition, from our youngest EYFS children to the children in year 6. The children all did an amazing job, and parents can see the product of their hard work in the books in the entrance hall, which contain all of their writing.
Each year the staff have a hard job selecting just one piece of writing for each year group, to put forward to the RLT competition, where just one winning piece is chosen for each year group from all of the schools. In the photographs you can see the pieces of work put forward for each year group.
A huge congratulations to Seth, who was the winning entry for the whole of RLT for Year 5.

KS2 Athletics
Wed 12 Jun 2024Years 3-6 set off full of excitement for a day of athletics in Corby for the RLT KS2 Athletics Festival. There were a range of activities for the children to take part in, including field and track events. Children had the opportunity to practice their throwing and jumping skills, as well as run a variety of distances around the track.
We were very proud of all the children for taking part, and doing their best. It was lovely to see children encouraging each other, and cheering others on from the stands inbetween their own events.
We came away with 15 medals - not bad for the second smallest school in the trust!

African Drumming Workshops
Mon 10 Jun 2024On 10th June we were very pleased to welcome Ollie from the Music Hub to the school to teach everyone about African drumming. He led a series of workshops over the day for each class, and was very impressed with the children's sense of rhythm and pattern. Well done everyone!
We finished the day with a performance from Cobalt class to the rest of the school to demonstrate all we had learnt about ostinati, call and response, syncopation, rhythm and pattern.

KS1 RLT Athletics
Fri 07 Jun 2024The KS1 RLT Athletics festival took place at Corby Stadium again this year. The KS1 event is a more relaxed event, where children get the opportunity to try our various skills, and experience what it is like to run on a track and jump into a real sandpit. The children did an amazing job, and were great sportsmen and women. Well done to everyone for being brave and trying some new activities.

RLT Dance Show
Wed 22 May 2024On Wednesday, Cobalt class took part in the annual RLT Dance Show at Catmose College. This year we were dancing to 'Believer', with strong movements and additional floor drumming.
The children did an amazing show, with great confidence - and it was great to see almost all of the class taking part.
Well done to all concerned, and thank you to Mrs Larratt and Mrs Creed for accompanying the children.

Pilgrimage to Peterborough
Tue 21 May 2024Tuesday saw the whole school depart from Exton on a coach for our pilgrimage to Peterborough Cathedral. A pilgrimage is literally 'a journey', and there was much excitement from our younger children about travelling on a coach!
The day had been put together for us by the education team at Peterborough Cathedral to help the children understand more about their diocesan cathedral and its history, and to understand a little more about what it means to be a church school.
In the morning the younger children used bricks, pictures, material and other resources to recreate our journey to Peterborough Cathedral from Exton in the aisles of the cathedral. They also had the opportunity to create their own bishop's mitres.
Meanwhile, in other parts of the cathedral, the older classes took part in a trio of activities to create pilgrim badges; to understand more about the role of the bishop and what the diocese is; and to find out more about the history of the cathedral and the buildings that preceded it.
After a quick lunch, it was time to explore some of our learning through art activities, with Aqua class making smudge art using some of the symbols they had seen around the church. Teal and Cobalt classes explored the cathedral building, looking for different shapes of interest, and then created pastel and ink art to create their own cathedral shape.
The day concluded with a shared collective worship in the nave of the church, where Canon Tim led us in readings and prayers, and we raised the roof with our singing.
Thank you to the cathedral team for putting the day together for us - we certainly have a better understanding of the cathedral as our 'mother church'.
It was great to have so many lovely comments from both the volunteers at the cathedral, and from the public who were sharing the space, about how beautifully behaved and polite the children were.
We look forward to visiting the cathedral again in the future.
